Hyvä Theme is Now Open Source and Free
Last Updated: November 10, 2025

Big news! Starting from November 10 (today!), Hyvä Theme becomes fully open-source and freely available. This announcement was made on November 6 during the Meet Magento Netherlands 2025 where yours truly had an honor to be an Orange sponsor as a part of Magento community.

According to the blog post on Hyvä’s website, the decision to make the Hyvä Theme open-source and free follows five years of product development and community building.

Here’s how it works now

  • Hyvä Theme becomes freely available on GitHub and via free Packagist Composer keys provided through Hyvä Portal at hyva.io.

  • Hyvä UI will become available as a separate product (€250 which is about $288).

  • Existing Hyvä Theme licensees will keep their premium support and access to Hyvä UI.

  • Cashbacks keep being available for clients who upgrade to Hyvä Commerce.

  • Hyvä Checkout and Hyvä Enterprise will no longer require a paid Hyvä Theme license

Hyvä Theme Goes Open-Source: What Does It Mean for the Magento Community?

Hyvä is relicensing the Hyvä Theme under the OSL 3.0 + AFL 3.0 licenses, which means that, just like Magento Open Source, Hyvä Theme can be used freely. In practice, this means developers, merchants, and agencies can now customize, extend, modify, and redistribute the Hyvä Theme free of charge, including for commercial projects.

The rest of Hyvä’s product line – Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Enterprise, and Hyvä Commerce – will remain proprietary under the company’s commercial license to ensure continued investment and development.

  • Total code access. Anyone can now explore Hyvä’s codebase, learn from it, and build on top of it. This move lowers the barrier to entry for smaller agencies, startups, and independent developers.

  • A learning platform. Students and new entrepreneurs now have a world-class frontend framework to study and experiment with for free

  • More innovation. Thanks to Hyvä’s dual AFL licensing, developers can now even create and sell their own commercial themes built on Hyvä, under their own preferred license terms.

So, merchants can now enjoy the freedom to build what they need, own what they build, and own their customer data. In a world increasingly dominated by SaaS platforms that dictate vendor lock-in, this move stands as a bold statement in favor of open markets, open code, and open choice.

“This step marks our gratitude to the community… and opens doors for students and beginning entrepreneurs.”

This move totally corresponds with Hyvä’s core values – the company was originally founded to address the lack of modern front-end options for the Magento platform, empowering the Magento community to grow and develop in highly competitive environments. Hyvä reports strong traction prior to the change: more than 6,000 live customers, including enterprise merchants such as Nestlé, Volkswagen and Dunkin’ are among them. The company frames its open-source move as a strategic return to its community-driven roots and a way to support long-term ecosystem health.

We at Amasty consider this step an important milestone for the Magento open‐source front-end space, as it underlines the value of the community and provokes further development of the Magento e-commerce ecosystem. Just a little reminder: Amasty’s top extensions are Hyvä-compatible, so you can easily use our modules to extend the Magento functionality for your e-commerce store.
